Rugby League the professional side of the rugby game, originating in the
north of England after the split in the game, over payments to players for loss
of earnings. Also played in Australia, New Zealand and France, the game has
never captured the imagination of the whole of the UK public, despite many
attempts to spread the game south. Before the change to professionalism in the
Union game, players who changed "codes" would find it very difficult
to regain their amateur status.
