Frank Boylen who played rugby union for West Hartlepool and rugby league for England in 1908 picture shows Frank with his collection of caps.

Frank Boylen was signed by Hull FC from West Hartlepool Rugby Union Club in 1908. The moved no doubt happened because  West Hartlepool switched to football in 1908! He also played for Hartlepool Rovers RU.

Hartlepool was a bit of a hotbed for rugby in the late 19th / early 20th century , as players from Yorkshire, Lancashire, Wales, etc, had moved there because of the availability of work on both the digging of the docks and the building of the railways to the Durham Colliery.

He won caps for England while at Hull in 1909 against both Australia and Wales and 1910 against Wales. He won  a cap for Great Britain while at Hull in 1909 against Australia. He was Hull FC’s first GB tourist in 1910 to Austalia and New Zealand. That he represented England , as well as Yorkshire, is an indication of the lax qualifying rules in those days,  as he was born in Ireland, with both his mother and father being Irish.
